Success Story: Self-Advocacy & Empowerment

Supporting and empowering participants in achieving their self-identified independent living goals is the heart of our mission. One participant’s journey is a powerful example of what can happen when individuals receive training, support, and encouragement to work toward the goals that matter most to them.

When Sean first came to Direct Advocacy & Resource Center (Direct), he was very shy, soft-spoken, and lacked confidence communicating with people he did not know. He often spoke so quietly that others had difficulty hearing him. His goal was to strengthen his communication skills so he could successfully obtain and maintain employment.

To build these skills, Sean worked with Direct staff to practice conversations, including mock interviews and independently navigating busy public spaces such as mall food courts. Sean also started journaling to organize his thoughts, build confidence, and communicate with greater purpose.

Through consistent practice and feedback, Sean learned to speak with confidence and ensure communication is effective in both social and work settings. He consistently applied these skills, resulting in a successful internship at Ace Hardware, where he demonstrated professionalism and growing confidence interacting with coworkers and customers.

With growing confidence, Sean continues investing in his future. He recently enrolled in financial management classes at Pima Community College to further develop his independent living and career readiness skills. Sean shared, “I appreciate Todd (Direct staff member) and how he’s helped me open up and get comfortable in places that are uncomfortable.”

Sean continues to challenge himself by embracing new experiences. His willingness to practice, accept feedback, and persevere has led to significant growth in his confidence and communication skills, bringing him closer to achieving his employment goals.
